Description
Participation in sport and physical activity has a plethora of associated benefits ranging from improved health to developing elite performers but the extent to which these benefits are realised is dependent upon the process of sport development. In short, sport development is about providing opportunities and pathways for people to take part and fulfil their potential in sport. Pursuing a career in this industry provides graduates with a chance to impact on peoples’ perceptions of and engagement with sport and physical activity, which has much greater implications for the UK economy and the wider world.
The BSc (Hons) Sport Development degree provides a strong foundation to pursue such a career and is highly regarded by the student body.
The course focuses on developing your intellectual knowledge and understanding of sport development within a local, national and international context, with a focus on school, community and elite sport. Course content considers the macro and micro components of effective sport development in relation to sport policy, sport management and marketing and the structure and resourcing of sport.
You will complete compulsory problem-based learning and work placement modules, facilitating a better understanding of both the theory and practice of sport development and the relationship between the two. In particular, this will provide you with a good understanding of how sporting opportunities are developed and their potential impact within the different sport development settings.
In addition to the course specific work placement modules, Cardiff Met offers a plethora of 'on-campus' and external voluntary opportunities for you to pursue. Whilst there will be opportunities to engage in coaching and facility management/administration roles on campus, the University also has excellent links with Sport Cardiff (Cardiff Council’s sport development department), in addition to surrounding local authorities and National Governing Bodies of sport. This will provide you student with access to a wealth of valuable experiential learning opportunities (within school, community and elite settings), which will facilitate further development of key vocational skills.
Overall, the Sport Development course aims to ensure that you will be an independent, knowledgeable, creative, work-ready graduate, who will be successful in your chosen career.
