School of Welsh

We are a vibrant, successful and homely School.

Welsh flag behind held by two people

Although we are the oldest Welsh department in Wales, we are looking to the future and to the development of our language, our society and our identity in contemporary Wales.

The study of language and literature is combined with unique modules relevant to Welsh in today’s Wales. Whatever the subject area, whether the poetry of the Middle Ages or language technology, we use innovative and progressive methods of study. The wide range of modules available to undergraduate students includes translation studies, language technology in the digital age, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, ethnicity and multiculturalism, mapping the Welsh, Cardiff’s Welsh culture and many more.

With our prominent and hardworking staff, we influence social, cultural and political life. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework results prove the impact that the School’s research has beyond the walls of academia.

Our research specialisms feed in to our teaching and we are eager to nurture your skills and contribute to your success in a way that will make a difference to your future. According to the latest statistics, 95% of the School’s graduates were working or undertaking further study within six months of graduating. You will also have multiple opportunities to participate in work experience with a range of institutions.

Beyond our academic programmes, we are helping to ensure the prosperity of the Welsh language by working with the local community. The Welsh for Adults Centre teaches Welsh to more than 1,700 adults in Cardiff and the Vale. In addition to this the new Welsh for All programme offers Cardiff University students the opportunity to learn Welsh, completely free, alongside their academic studies.

Welsh life in Cardiff

Student life isn’t all work. Beyond the academic, Cardiff offers many attractions and activities which will meet many different tastes.

Cardiff is the youngest capital city in Western Europe and it is an ideal place to spend your University years. It is a welcoming, cosmopolitan and friendly city with a lively Welsh-language culture. There are almost 37,000 Welsh speakers living here and there are numerous opportunities to socialise through the medium of Welsh.

Life in Cardiff

There is also an energetic and vital Welsh community within the University. The Welsh Society (or the Gym Gym) at the Student’s Union delivers all kinds of Welsh language activities for students.

Many students are also members of Aelwyd y Waun Ddyfal which has won many national awards including Youth Choir of Wales in 2013. It provides an opportunity to sing and socialise with other Welsh speakers and compete in eisteddfods and musical festivals.

As a School we are keen to hold events where staff and students can come together to socialise. We host a poetry stomp annually between staff and students and the competition is always enthusiastic.

University’s Welsh residences

All undergraduate students who make an application during the normal UCAS process (i.e. come to Cardiff as a firm or insurance choice) are guaranteed accommodation in their first year.

There are some flats in Senghennydd Court and Tal-y-Bont North which are kept for Welsh speakers and learners who wish to live together.
