School of Psychology

Cardiff University School of Psychology is one of the largest and best departments in the UK.  We offer outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate teaching informed by international cutting-edge research.  The last Teaching Quality Assessment judged our teaching ‘Excellent’, and we consistently obtain the highest scores possible for our research (see RAE 2014).

The main Psychology location is the Tower Building, but we also work in offices elsewhere on Park Place (51, 57-58, 63-64 and the Law Building). Some researchers have additional office space in Biosciences and/or Medicine via joint appointments and collaborative research programmes.

The School offers a friendly and supportive environment to learn about Psychology. All individuals have the chance to develop skills that will help advance their career prospects both inside and outside of Psychology (see Careers).  Our size has the benefit of allowing us to offer research-led teaching across most of the major areas in Psychology (organised under four broad themes, NeuroscienceCognitive ScienceDevelopmental & Health Psychology and Social and Environmental Psychology) and students are active participants in our current research, through projects, seminars, vacation schemes and even online blogs (see Degree Programmes). Students on professional placements benefit from strong collaborative research and teaching links with local hospitals, forensic psychiatric services and prisons.

We are fortunate to have access to state-of-the-art facilities supporting interdisciplinary research (Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre), and have strong collaborations within Cardiff (Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute and the Sustainable Places Research Institute), and more broadly in Wales (Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience). Our research findings are frequently covered by the media and we undertake work with industry, charitable bodies and politicians (see Engagement and Impact).
