School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies

We are a top rated institution in the UK for media teaching and research that helps to shape international media, journalism and communication landscapes.

We offer a wide range of courses at various levels with postgraduate degrees that range from industry oriented, practice-based training to more academic degrees. We combine a long-standing record of excellence in teaching and training with an outstanding research portfolio, routinely winning awards from a wide range of bodies.

This reputation was recently recognised in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework where we were ranked 2nd for the quality of our journalism, media and communications research. When compared with 66 other institutions in the UK, 89% of our research was classed as either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, with both our research environment and the impact of our research receiving a score of 100%.

Our lectures are delivered by a diverse teaching team of established academics and industry leaders who also regularly contribute expert opinion and commentary about research and topical news events to the national media and the school blog.

We are also fully committed to supporting, developing and promoting equality and diversity in all of our practices and activities. We offer an inclusive culture with a range of support services for students with disabilities and learning difficulties.

Centre for Community Journalism

Here at the School, we are also home to one of the Vice Chancellor's flagship Engagement Projects- the Centre for Community Journalism. The Centre supports the development of community news hubs in Wales while offering advice and guidance for hyper locals in the UK and around the world.

Managed by former BBC social media producer Emma Meese, the Centre offers networking, information and training for hyperlocal and community journalists while supporting new forms of local digital journalism and exploring new, sustainable models for news.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Each year we are delighted to welcome students from over thirty different countries to study with us in the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

We understand the challenges you face when living and studying overseas for the first time and our staff are dedicated to ensure you settle quickly and start thriving in our friendly and vibrant community.

We are confident that should you choose to join us here in Cardiff, you will feel at home, motivated to reach your potential, and well prepared for your future career.

"We were a class of 59 people from about 20 different countries. I learnt first-hand how culture affects the way people view the world and interpret information. It made the words 'International' and 'Global' in the course title more real."

Manji Yarling - International Public Relations and Global Communications Management (MA)

Focus on international research and employability

Many of our lecturing staff have a range of international experience across journalism, media and communications while others are involved in collaborative research and partnerships with universities and journalism schools worldwide, such as our recent visiting student agreement with Bahauddin Zakariya University, Pakistan.

We are distinctive in that two of our postgraduate courses, MA International Journalism and MA International Public Relations and Global Communications Management, are specifically designed to prepare students to work internationally.

Our more academic based undergraduate and postgraduate degrees such as MA Journalism, Media and Communications and BA Journalism and Communications are also suitable for international students as both degrees tackle global media and communications developments.

English language support

We offer specific in-sessional English language support to help you in your studies, with a number of online self-access materials to help you develop your English for academic purposes. Tuition in grammar, conversation and presentation skills, as well as academic writing are available. Individual tutorials are also available for all students from the English Language Programme team.

This is a unique addition to the pre-sessional English language summer courses provided to students who hold an offer to study at Cardiff University and are looking to improve their English or achieve specific language requirements.
