Our high standards and international reputation means that we support around:

  • 400 postgraduate students
  • 100 academic staff members
  • 200 research, technical and professional service staff members.

We foster a friendly, supportive staff and student environment, and we encourage ideas and innovation. As an employer, we are committed to promoting diversity and equal opportunities in the workplace. We currently hold an Athena Swan Bronze Award for our commitment to supporting women in engineering.

Reputation

We pride ourselves on our vibrant research culture and many of our staff are involved in large-scale, internationally recognised research projects. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), we were ranked 1st in the UK for Civil Engineering and 7th in General Engineering, which incorporated our Mechanical and Electrical and Electronic Engineering disciplines, and we were also ranked top in the UK for the impact of our research across all of our disciplines.

Our undergraduate programmes are well regarded and they are highly valued by employers. We are one of very few engineering schools invited to be part of both the Power Academy and the Electronic Skills Foundation, which provide industrial experience, professional development courses and scholarships for our students.

We aim to provide a supportive, friendly and stimulating environment which allows students to fulfil their potential, while producing world-class research that benefits the local, national and international community.
