School of Archaeology, Geology and Environmental Science

The School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science is home to two leading Departments within the University of Reading.
The aim of the School is to further the understanding of environmental systems, human communities and their interactions in the past, present and future.

We seek to provide qualified people and knowledge to guide policy in sustainable development, contribute to the national economy, and to acquire an understanding of the past.

RESEARCH
Research in the School analyses the interaction of human and physical environments across a range of temporal and spatial scales, encompassing the natural, built and social worlds.

Rates and causes of change in environmental and natural earth systems are studied through the application of rigorous scientific methods, complemented by the interpretation of human perception, experience and agency.

The School aims to further our understanding of past and contemporary human communities and natural systems, and to guide policy in sustainable development, governance and conservation for the future.

TEACHING AND LEARNING
We are proud of our record in teaching and learning across our undergraduate, master's and PhD programmes, delivering challenging, rewarding, relevant and attractive programmes of study in a supportive environment. We have a clear focus on student achievement and employability, we embrace new modes of delivery and seek to provide the best approaches to enhancing our students' experiences. This is underpinned by a firm commitment to valuing, supporting and developing all staff engaged in teaching and learning.

WELLBEING, EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY
In all of this, across our research and teaching activity, we strive to cultivate an open, interactive and friendly working environment. We are delighted to have been recognised with an Athena SWAN Silver award for our commitment to proactive gender-neutral employment practice, and ensure we have strong support for those with disabilities and flexible working arrangements throughout our departments.
