Description

Taught by staff from academia and industry, this degree will deepen your understanding of the diversity of plants on earth and their conservation.

As part of an intimate, international group of students, you will gain considerable hands-on experience with plants on this course, so that your theoretical understanding is matched by practical skills, including plant identification.

The course has an excellent record of graduates going on to higher (research) degrees or employment in the sector, and features:

- Taught modules
- Field work
- An individual research project.
Teaching takes place both within the University of Reading's Whiteknight's campus, as well as on site visits to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; RHS Garden Wisley and nature reserves. The Whiteknights campus itself features species-rich meadows, ancient trees, woodland areas, a Herbarium, glasshouses and a Botanic Garden.

Class sizes vary from small groups of 10–15 students for modules unique to this master’s degree, to 25–35 students for modules shared with other courses. You will be taught by staff from academia and industry; our external staff have links to major botanical institutions such as:

- The Royal Horticultural Society
- RHS Garden Wisley
- The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
- The Natural History Museum
- RSK Group Ltd (a major Environmental Consultancy).
Your individual research project can be carried out overseas, depending on your individual circumstances and requirements, and subject to consultation with teaching staff.

Research within the department focuses on taxonomy and systematics, vegetation survey and assessment, ecological consultancy projects.
