Description

The BSc Business Management with Welsh is an innovative and modern course, designed to combine the main elements of a Business Management degree with the study of the Welsh language and its culture, preparing students for opportunities within the changing labour market in Wales. This combination is intended to enhance the range of professional employment opportunities open to graduates whilst also allowing a multidisciplinary approach and broad scope in conjunction with Welsh language modules, and allow flexible options for students who want to pursue different subjects with language skills.

Through your study of Business Management you will gain a thorough knowledge of the main disciplines relevant to management and business together with an appreciation of the different functional areas involved in business organisations. You will therefore develop a solid core of knowledge in the area of business management that will allow you to build on strong foundations to specialise in areas that you find interesting and that reflect your career aspirations. In studying Welsh you will develop high-level skills in the language itself as well as gaining a thorough understanding of its place in contemporary Wales. After the first year you will have the opportunity to specialize by choosing from a range of optional modules. These cover a variety of fields of particular relevance to business and management including language planning and policy, the sociology of language, sociolinguistics, language technology, and professional translation, as well as literary, linguistic and cultural topics.

There are many synergies between the two aspects of the degree, such as the role of Welsh in the modern workplace, its place in a digital economy, and the role of marketing in its promotion, to name but a few.

Graduates who have high-level skills in both business management and Welsh are in high demand. Cardiff is the political, business and media capital of Wales, and the programme will be able to take advantage of the close links that both Schools have with industry.

Overall, the degree in Business Management with Welsh prepares students for a wide variety of careers in business with an ability to work bilingually at a high level in both Welsh and English.

Distinctive features

  • The opportunity to study literary, cultural and creative modules that emphasise the wider cultural context of the Welsh language. Modules in fields such as creative writing, children’s literature, and heritage and tourism combine specialist subject knowledge, the cultural context and relevant skills in order to enrich your understanding of Welsh in contemporary Wales.
  • Teaching by staff in two Schools noted for their research quality and impact.
  • The chance to gain well-developed employability and creative skills, combined with a bilingual business acumen that is highly valued in today's competitive workplace.

Students on this programme will be eligible to apply for Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Incentive Scholarships of £500 a year as they will be studying at least 33% (40 credits a year) of the scholarship subject through the medium of Welsh.
